Day 316 - Made

Made (2001) directed by Jon Favreau

Made and Swingers are always mentioned together because of the Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn pairing though the movies are far apart in heart (and quality). But people are right to compare them simply because Favreau and Vaughn play the same characters in basically every single movie I've ever seen them in. Favreau always plays the the uptight nervous guy who can't really let go and Vaughn always plays the loose I-don't-care-too-cool-for-school semi-prick. When a person always plays the same person over and over I wonder if it's because that's how he actually is in real life and isn't really acting. I've always known it but for some reason it never occurred to me just how limited Vince Vaughn is. I only mention it because this is the first time that I genuinely hated a Vince Vaughn character even though it's the same character I've seen in a dozen other movies.

In Made, Favreau plays Bobby who is a bottom of the totem pole guy who is an unsuccessful amateur boxer. He is struggling to support his stripper girlfriend and daughter that isn't even his. He decides to take a job from his mob boss. He insists on bringing along his life long friend Ricky who is sort of a pain in the ass screwball but he feels like he owes him a favor. So Bobby and Ricky go to New York as a representative of the mob boss to make a pick-up. Hilarity ensues when Ricky tries to have a good time with his embarrassing behavior in front of big time mobsters. Ultimately the film is about a rocky love-hate friendship between Bobby and Ricky in a classic odd couple type relationship where no matter how bad things are between them you just know when the chips are down, they will come through for each other.

Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs has a pretty awesome cameo where he just talks down on people. I wonder if that is how he is in real life at Bad Boy Records behind the scenes bossing people around.

Overall Made is a funny guy's comedy that isn't quite Swingers, but not many films are.
