Outrage (2011) directed by Takeshi Kitano
There are no good guys in Outrage to root for. Everyone is rotten to the core and almost all will come to a bloody end in one way or another. Perhaps its a good thing that we can't pick favorites in this film because that way we won't be too attached to them when they are mercilessly killed. Outrage is an outrageously violent yakuza film about two rival gangs interlocked in a battle for power where only a handful of people will come out unscathed.
Despite this being an end to end blood-fest you need to pay close attention to the story because there are a plethora of characters, plot points, and double crosses to keep track of. I had difficulty remembering who was who or why such and such was killing so and so. You cannot go five minutes of film time without a couple of yakuza punching another guy in the face for apparently no reason. Later in the film, these kicks and punches will seem harmless compared to some of the imaginative ways they find to inflict pain and death. In some ways though it doesn't really matter if you cannot keep up with the plot because it is all about the bloody and intense atmosphere of the film. Just know that these rival gangs mean business and that nobody is safe from their violent war. Things do start to make sense when all the double crossing is revealed and executions start taking place. It is a power struggle of epic proportions and you never really know who will come out on top. I sort of wish the story was a lot tighter because I was lost through a lot of it. That speaks volumes for the rest of the film though because I was still captivated throughout.
Grade: B+
